In many ways T-Top Manufacturing (Bridgeport, TX) is your typical job shop. The fabricator employs a variety of equipment for cutting, punching, and bending to serve customers in Fire & Rescue, Bulk Containers, Airport Systems, Oil Fields and other industries. When the company set out to standardize on a nesting software, however, the end result would be anything but typical.
Engineering Manager, Mike Dugan has been with the company for more than nine years. “With the purchase of a second turret punch it became clear that we should take the opportunity to find a single source solution that would drive all of our fabrication machinery,” explained Dugan. “Each piece of equipment came with its unique software. Yet we knew that we couldn’t run an effective shop with our machinery operating as islands.”
Sizing up the Field
T-Top evaluated software from several sources including Radan, Lantek, Stryker, and SigmaTEK’s SigmaNEST program. In the end SigmaNEST held a number of advantages over its competitors:
- Strong punch package
- Conformed nicely to windows-based navigation
- Easier to use
- More advanced overall functionality
- Easy part import
- SOLIDWORKS integration
75% Faster Programming
SigmaNEST integrates seamlessly with SOLIDWORKS. “We saw an immediate difference with importing entire assemblies rather than separate parts,” said Dugan. “Our programming time was increased by 75%.”
- 75% faster programming
- Multiple fabrication machines are now driven by a single software solution
- One programmer is now doing the work that previously required three
Implementing Just-in-Time Nesting
T-Top Manufacturing had only scratched the surface on its return on investment. When SigmaTEK’s SimTrans was added to the mix, savings really skyrocketed.
SimTrans is an online data transaction manager. The program serves as a bridge between SigmaNEST nesting software and MRP/ERP, order entry, and other business systems.
What would your company do with an extra $100,000 each quarter?
A tightly integrated shop floor has transformed this job shop into a model of efficiency. Nesting and cutting over 15,000 new parts each year might overwhelm some shops of similar size; but T-Top is leveraging Just-in-Time (JIT) fabrication supported by SigmaNEST and SimTans. A JIT process allows fabricators to stock only standard sheets. This alone is delivering T-Top Manufacturing a saving of more than $100,000…. each quarter.
As the company continues to implement a wide-spread Just-in-Time nesting and paperless environment, it’s safe to say that SigmaTEK’s products will continue to play a major role in their continued growth.
