In racing speed and agility are vital; not only on the track, but on the shop floor as well. Pratt & Miller Engineering (New Hudson, MI) designs and builds some of the world’s highest performing race cars for General Motors racing teams. Operating under the most time-compressed deadlines, engineering and fabrication teams at Pratt & Miller work to ensure that customer expectations are always exceeded.
Responsive & Agile
Like any manufacturer Pratt & Miller must balance turn-around with manufacturing cost and efficiency. Pratt & Miller cuts materials ranging from steel and aluminum to carbon fiber panels. And when the company invested in a new waterjet, the machine’s representative recommended SigmaNEST nesting software to help maximize material savings while fully leveraging the machine’s advanced cutting features.
After comparing nesting software programs, a decision was made in favor of SigmaNEST. “We are obviously not a traditional manufacturer with large runs,” explained Design Engineer, Mike Kurylo. “Most of our parts are one-offs and generally very intricate. SigmaNEST allows us to nest parts in the most efficient way and then add tabs for support.”
Fabrication at Pratt & Miller has to be fast, accurate and extremely responsive. “The nature of our business dictates that we must be able to change on the fly,” said Kurylo. “SigmaNEST allows us to quickly nest and tab even the smallest and most intricate of parts while keeping track of stock.”
As they continue to expand fabrication capabilities, Pratt & Miller can proceed knowing that the flexibility of SigmaNEST will allow them to program all cutting machines (waterjet, laser, plasma, etc.) with a single programming solution.
