With the advent of Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) systems material remnants once destined for the scrap bin have been finding their way back into production just like any other sheet stock. Remnant Tracking and Management: Nesting
The best way to track remnants and catalog material has always been within your nesting program. This is because you can store true scrap geometry, and reuse this geometry in future programs. However, this meant inventory was now tracked within your nesting program and kept cataloged separately within an inventory control system. Recently, there have been releases of single source software that can relate remnants from a nesting program into a shops inventory control program. This helps create a more lean environment, in which the programmer can see all inventory from remnants to full sheet stock, create the program which yield the biggest return and best nest, the automatically deduct sheets from stock. This recall step triggers events prompting accounting to order new sheet stock, or gain true costs of production.
As remnants are created they are stored for future job runs. When a job is scheduled MRP software takes part shapes into consideration and checks the nest layout against cataloged remnant type, shape and thickness; this can be done by hand if a tracking system is not in place. If a suitable remnant match is found a nest is created to fit the remnant.
